Songs of Summer
by Jane L. Rosen
Heartwarming and charming read! (2/17/2025)
Songs of Summer centers on Maggie's journey to meet her birth mother after her parents pass away. She discovers that her birth mother is spending time on Fire Island, and takes the chance to try to meet her. At a crossroads with her new fiancé (but long time best friend) Jason, Maggie also realizes that what brought her comfort in the past may not make her happy in the future.

This was a heartwarming and fun read, and I loved exploring Fire Island through the eyes of the book's characters. Maggie is the owner of her parents' old record store, and music is a big part of her life. As such, I enjoyed how song titles were woven into the story and tied to each big part of Maggie's journey toward self-discovery. Though the ending was predictable, it was quite sweet and comforting. This was an enjoyable beach read!
One Death at a Time
by Abbi Waxman
A fun, mysterious romp through Hollywood! (1/14/2025)
I really enjoyed this smart mystery based in LA's Hollywood scene! Abbi Waxman has the gift of creating quirky, relatable characters and this was true for main character Mason. I loved her dynamic with actress Julia, and how they bonded as recovering alcoholics.

They team up to solve the murder of a director who was found dead in the pool of Julia's mansion. Although she's 90 certain she didn't kill him, Julia has no idea how he ended up dead. They were former friends turned enemies, yet she had no strong motive to kill him. Julia enlists her team of assistants to solve the crime, and Mason gets pulled into some shenanigans that are somewhat dangerous, but highly entertaining.

This novel was a wild, enjoyable ride! I had a bit of trouble keeping track of all of the characters, but still had fun with the story. I am not a big movie buff so some of the movie details were lost on me, but could see how this aspect would appeal to many readers. I adored the house chef Claudia and the many pets that appeared throughout the story! I recommend this novel and hope Abbi Waxman writes more in the mystery genre!
Beast of the North Woods: Monster Hunter Mysteries #3
by Annelise Ryan
A fun, quirky, cozy mystery! (11/29/2024)
Beast of the North Woods was a wonderful cozy mystery that kept me entertained throughout! This was my first novel by Annelise Ryan, but I enjoyed her writing style and the midwestern setting.

Morgan is a no-nonsense cryptozoologist (though I initially had no idea what that was!) who is up for any challenge. I enjoyed her mystery-solving alongside her cute pup Newt, and how he protected her during some sketchy situations. This book checked a lot of boxes for me: mystery, crime-solving, and a bit of quirkiness. The romance was a bit bland, though it wasn't a focus of the story. I found parts of the big reveal a bit too complicated, but overall enjoyed how everything unfolded.

Reading Beast of the North Woods inspired me to pick up the other books in the series, as I want the backstory about what happened to Morgan's parents and the deal with her ex, David. I flew through this one and look forward to reading Ryan's backlog!
