I thoroughly enjoyed this selection. Mrs. Plansky is quite a character! The story also served as a cautionary tale. So easy for grandparents to get sucked into such a scheme. So, if I had to give it a rating, it would be more a 3 1/2 than an 4. But I read it in one day. So that certainly tells you something. (less)

I started reading not knowing what to expect. I am familiar with the term Activities of Daily Living. But as the story of The Father progressed, along with it went The Artist, and lots of other bits and pieces. At some point, I felt, "Enough!". After reading Isabel Wilkerson's The Warmth of Many Sons, as well as presenting an art talk on the Harlem Renaissance (with a focus on the causes of the Great Migration), I looked forward to learning more about these mothers of special sons. And, while I did learn more, I …more missed the technique of vignettes that Wilkerson used, to "show not tell". The book spans the 20th century in its scope, and cements the legacy of these ladies in history. (less)
