Why do we say "Get Into The Swing"?

To develop a rhythm/become good at something. Can be used to describe a physical or mental activity.

Background:

The logical source of this expression is from the pendulum of a clock which swings evenly and repetively. One early use was by Thomas Huxley who used the expression in Life and Letters, written in 1864.
