Melanie and Antoine react quite differently when they discover the truth about their mother and her death. Why do you think that Melanie chooses not to remember? Do you think you would react more like Melanie or Antoine?

I think that Melanie is more fearful than Antoine. The first hints of what may have happened to her mother are too much for her - especially since she's about to lose her father as well. She's alone, no children, no spouse (not even an ex-spouse). She basically freaks out and doesn't want to know any more.
I understand it, but I could never resist a secret -especially a sexy mystery surrounding my mother's death?! I'm definitely with Antoine on this one.

I would probably act more like Melanie. The difference in their reactions are I think related to gender differences. Antoine wants the facts and all the facts as his way of reconciling his own feelings. Melanie prefers to let sleeping dogs lie and preserve peace in the family and hang on to her own vision of the mother and father she remembers from childhood. I am more of to Melanie's way as to most family secrets from the past and think should stay in the past especially if it is emotionally charged for those in the present.

I don't agree that these choices fall along gender lines - Melanie was the first one to say they needed to investigate, and the first to start asking questions. And I know more men who would avoid the whole issue of a strange secret - especially one concerning their mothers - than women who would run from it.

Probably some of both- I can understand being so excited and curious in the beginning and then getting frightened as you get closer to the answer. I know myself that I would have followed through to the end- I can't stand not knowing all the answers. Maybe Melanie was afraid to find out because she thought she was like her mother.

Antoine was much more realistic and honest in his reaction. Even our parents are human and we need to love them with all of their flaws. The truth might be difficult, but it's better than hiding. Remember what happened in "Sarah's Key" because of all the secrets?
