Whose story do you empathize with the most? Which character do you like the most? Which one surprised you the most?

I sympathize with Anne the most. I liked her the most. And the big surprise for me is how she persevered and survived her treatment while under Cheyenne capture. I didn't particularly find a lot about Libbie to like, and found Custer selfish and egocentric. I did have compassion for him and his angst and "visions" about the men around him who died in battle, his conflicted feelings about the Indians, and his disappointment and trials adjusting to a post-war hero's life.

iI have to sympathize with Anne. She watched family members being killed. She then was taken by the Indians, had two children, and had to leave them behind. My heart truly went out to her.

I agree with Cynthia and lucy's that Anne was the character I empathized with most. It was easy to put myself in her place and wonder if I would have been able to survive that treatment.

But I also found things to like about Libbie. She had her own challenges, although they were much different from Anne's. And I even at moments found myself feeling sorry for Custer. War is hell. For everybody.

I empathize the most with Anne. Her story was heartbreaking. She had a horrible life. She saw her family killed, had a miserable life with the Indians and it got even worse after she was "rescued". She lost her children. As a mother I can feel deep empathy for how much that must have hurt her.
I like her the most. I felt she was the character with the fewest flaws. I was surprised by Libbies ability to put up with Custer's flaws and still love him. If I was her I would have resented him more. He was very selfish and self centered.

I found Anne the most sympathetic. Her lot was not of her own making.

I also empathized with Anne the most & found myself wanting more of her story and less of Custer's story.

Yes Anne was the one you cared about the most. The life she endured was so hard and brutal. I so wanted a sort of happy ending for her but that was not her lot.

I agree that Anne's story was brutal and sad, but I always find it difficult to read about women who are forced into society's norms. She should have known her distant family was dysfunctional and I think she could have shown more agency. I don't mean to be hard on her...I probably wouldn't have made it through the first year!

I honestly could not like or emphathize with any of the main characters, real or fictional. In the end I was actually disappointed with the character of Anne because after all she had been through, she did not plan very well and she gave up too readily.

I empathize with Anne the most. One of my favorite books has always been "Ride the Wind" by Lucia St. Clair Robson. Anne's story reminds me of that book's main character. It took strength and courage to survive. She also had to be very adaptable.

I expected to be most interested in Anne’s story but was disappointed in its development. I found myself more eager to read about Libbie and how she survived her marriage to such a rotten husband. Her’s was truly a story of survival!

Anne was a tragic heroine and I sympathized with her. Her family was massacred, she was a slave with the tribe that she ended up with and was treated brutally by her warrior husband. When she was rescued, she had to leave her children behind and went into a situation which ultimately became as bad as when she was a captive. I didn't understand the end of the book and did further reading to try and figure out what was happening, but couldn't find anything was helpful.

I guess the character I liked the most was Eliza; she was practical and down to earth and kept things going. I did have a character that I despised and that was Josiah. The man was evil under the cloak of religion. None of the characters surprised me.
