Lucy carries around Cheri’s necklace throughout the novel, a broken blue butterfly, until she leaves it with the flowers in the cave. What is the significance of the necklace?

The necklace is an important symbol in the novel. It represents the friendship between the two girls and later when Lucy finds it, the necklace becomes the impetus for her search and the physical and emotional journey in the book. The fact that it is broken is significant because the link between the girls is broken. I like that it was a butterfly suggesting flight. Cheri is finally free and can rest in peace. But Lucy is able to move on and leaves it behind.

I saw it as the beginning of solving the mystery - she gave something she once cherished to her best friend as a symbol of their friendship and when she finds it after the disappearance and death of the friend - she now has a clue to that disappearance.
