Was anyone else nervous when Mathinna gave Ruby the beads?

I was worried they would arrest her for some reason since they did take them from her mistress.

Not so much. By that time the Franklin's were pretty much over their social experiment. Mrs. F was pretty clueless and I doubt she really knew the meaning of what she had. They were all trinkets to her.

True, carolynd, but you never know....they were pretty cruel.

I was not nervous- perhaps I was being too naive. I thought it was such a kind gesture from Mathinna and evidently made Ruby very happy.

I guess I didn't think about that as they rightly belonged to Mathinna. Although I don't think British authorities would have sided with Mathinna if there were questions about ownership of the necklaces.

That is what I was worried about, ColoradoGirl.

christineb - it was a very kind gesture, but I figured they would say she stole them from the house, and they definitely would have put her back in jail. Yikes.

I was nervous. I could foresee Hazel being arrested for stealing the beads. A repeat of what happened to Evangeline.

Yes. I was also afraid she might be arrested.

Gloria...seeing what happened, my heart skipped a beat when they exchanged the beads.

Yes, I was worried that Hazel would end up back in prison for stealing. Hazel herself was quick to say that she hadn't "stolen" the necklaces, for they never really belonged to the governor's wife since she had taken them from Mathinna.

No, Mathinna was the owner and eager to share with Ruby. Mrs. Franklin was out of the picture.

No, I never even thought anything would happen. This was at the end of the book, if I remember right, so I was thinking that the Franklins’ “influence” was done, and she wasn’t worried about any repercussions.

I was worried for Mathinna's safety but I was more in awe of her kindness to Ruby.

dianaps....very true about her kindness....that definitely overshadowed the worry about the safety.

Was concerned. Thought, oh,no, they are gong to say she stole them. |But then Mrs F had no care about Ruby by then I don't believe.

joanw - I figured Mrs. F would reach as far as she was able. I'm glad she didn't.

I was nervous, she would get caught and be punished, however I was very pleased she had them, since they were hers.

gerryp - yes...I was very happy she had them and very nervous she would be punished again.

I was always expecting something unfortunate to happen to so many of these exiled women. It was a relief that nothing terrible occurred, but nevertheless I was uneasy.

(This was not a book to read for comfort.)

Not really, but the beads were very important to Mathinna. Her mother had made them for her and they held a lasting memory of her to Mathinna. Maybe the beads were Mathinna's way of saying to Ruby that her birth mother loved her too.
