After finishing the book, has your understanding of what it means to empower women changed, in terms of concept and execution? What are some of the ways Melinda suggested we—women and men—can all move out of this state of fear and into one of love and acceptance?

Reading this book gave me a broader understanding of what empowerment means. There are so many different groups of women with different issues; it is amazing the number of different areas empowerment covers. Family planning is a major issue in third world countries. If a women keeps having children and thus spending all her time caring for and feeding them, there is no time to get an education or sustain an income to improve their and their children's lives.

Yes, my understanding of empowerment has changed. I thought of it as somehow "fixing" whatever the issue was, but it's not something I can "bestow" upon another person. I now understand that I myself cannot empower you. I can only give you the resources you need to empower yourself and that's a beautiful thing. Many of these women helped themselves; I especially liked the story of the Indian women who were sex workers and how they banded together as a group to prevent the police from beating them or raping them.

Absolutely! We think in terms of what we know and the culture we live in. It was eye opening to think of what women around the world need to overcome to have equality. I found the book to be a bit of anthropology in that way.

Yes, it has changed. Finding your voice as a woman really depends on the culture you are living in. I tended to think more in terms of Western culture before I read this book. It did expand my views of empowerment and what lift means.

Many of us in the US are what I would call privileged. We see around us those who are not so privileged but nothing compares with what women in third world counties endure. This has been informative.

Yes. What I liked best about the book was a concept I had never consider: that empowerment is different for different women. Here in the US women worry about the glass ceiling, fulfillment in work and family. But fulfillment in a country where women are far more powerless, empowerment can just be the ability to plan pregnancies so that children can be fed, education can be gained, work can be more than hours-long trips getting water.

Empowering women around the world is a wonderful cause and it is good to see people with lots of money (power) reaching out to help those in need. While it is great that these people are helping around the world it would be nice to see more being done in the USA to empower women.

Yes. I really appreciated her perspective on creating outsiders and that empowerment is different for everyone.

Yes, it definitely has. As others have said, empowerment has many different faces and getting to know the women she was working with seemed to help Melinda be more effective in giving them what they needed.
