Is Caitlin driven by journalistic pursuit or some higher form of justice? Why does she choose to take this journey alone and not with Penn?

Describe Caitlin Masters' role at The Bone Tree. Is she driven by journalistic pursuit or some higher form of justice? Ultimately, why does she choose to take this journey alone and not with her fiancée, Penn?

In my opinion, she is driven by journalistic pursuit. She may think otherwise but the 'story' is the ultimate prize for her. She can use Henry as an excuse but, in the end, it is all about her getting the story she wants and perhaps another Pulitzer.

Absolutely journalistic pursuit. I thought she was incredibly selfish to put her baby at risk the way that she did...although I was shocked at her death...

Of course Caitlin is driven by journalistic pursuit bUt I part of it is but of I believe she was also driven to bring the truth to light and to seek justice thru her stories. I think Penn had a different reason for what he did and was looking more for a revenge rather than looking at the big picture.

I never doubted that Caitlin was motivated by her journalistic pursuits, but at times I felt like she wanted to be the sole person in the spotlight. (if she had survived, that is.)

I have to agree with earlier comments in the fact that Caitlin was driven solely by how she could further her career with this story. It was difficult to find any sympathy for the situation she got herself into as she was deceitful and untrustworthy during the pursuit of her latest column.

I agree that Caitlin was driven by her journalistic pursuit and need to find the story without regard for others. In the end she realized there was more in life than the story but by then it was to late for her or the baby. I did feel that this was a melodramatic end...which made her death more of a surprise.

I found very little to like about Caitlin. I found her to be driven by selfish motivations, wrapped in a shroud of the public's need to know. Journalism was her excuse for every selfish act, like a teenager who just wants their own way. By not sharing information with Penn, she became a victim of those very selfish motivations. I did not understand why she did not trust him with information that was so vital for the people they loved and survival against this great evil. So, in the end, the character of Caitlin seemed to me a literary tool to move the story forward by adding another level of discovery - but as a sympathetic character, a love interest for our hero, or one to feel vested in...no.

Of course Caitlin was driven primarily by journalistic pursuit and if perchance she were successful in providing important information to solve past injustices, so be it. She was eager to be the one who received the kudos at the end of her pursuits. Her own selfishness led to her demise and the demise of her unborn child.

Are any of use driven by only one thing in life? I believe only part of Caitlin is driven by her journalistic personality. Some part of her believes she is helping Penn to bring justice to the victims of the Eagles. Some part of her is helping her future father-in-law. Some part is trying to make the world better for her unborn child.

Caitlin does not give us much to admire about her. She is driven by journalistic pursuit and the need to do it all myself. She doesn't even take time to rationalize and then choose her direction. She just digs in without regard for safety or consequences. Caitlin is definitely not a team player.

It appears to be unanimous! Caitlin is not well-liked and she is driven solely by her journalistic ambition. I would guess that's why Iles killed her off before the third installment. Stay tuned!!

I agree that she caused her own death by her pursuit of journalistic rewards. A deeper question is "zips this common of journalists, out for their own fame rather than the truth.

Poor Caitlin, she had everything she ever wanted but recklessly threw it all away in her attempt to become as famous as Jordan Glass.

Caitlin is driven by her desire to break the big story. She seems troubled by the facts she hides from those she loves and in the end it costs her everything.

Caitlin is definitely driven by her desire to win another Pulitzer. Having said that, though, I think she was also trying to right some wrongs, and to protect Tom and Penn. That her efforts, undertaken alone and unprotected, were foolish and she paid the ultimate price. Too bad.
