Do you think each of the characters deserved their fate? Who, in your opinion, deserved better, who deserved worse, and why?

The author concludes with information about how each of the characters’ lives continued over the years. What did you think of their fates? Do you think everyone deserved their fate? Who, in your opinion, deserved better, who deserved worse, and why?

RE: Do you think each of the characters ...

Hualit was not a "perfect" aunt to Luzia as she was too concerned with her own survival but certainly did not deserve her fate. The king was slowly dying from gout and suffering from loneliness and that was a just reward. Valentina earned her happy life by growing and changing despite the patriarchal society she was born in to. Fortun lost his great powers and was in living a life of jeopardy based on lies and one could see it would not end well for him and feel a sense of satisfaction. Victor became afraid of living and his wife and child left him and thus he died alone and scared which was a perfect ending for him. Luzia and Santangel found the best lives possible given their circumstances-they had each other and travel and immortality-conventional happy lives were never in the cards for them.

RE: Do you think each of the characters ...

In a sense, every single character was in survival mode. They were each trying to climb the ladder of the caste system and improve their circumstances. Each rung on the ladder of that climb comes with a cost. Did I like what happened to each of the characters. No, but it made for a compelling read that it was tied up with everyone getting their happily ever after.

I particularly liked Victor's end. Without Santangel's "luck," Victor knows fear for the first time and is paralyzed by it. Unable to make any kind of decision for fear that it would be the wrong one, his wealth fades, his wife leaves him, and he dies alone. Valentina blossomed at the end, and it seemed fitting as we saw the change in her attitude toward Luzia. Hualit thought she had all situations in hand, but early in the book it seemed that her capabilities were not what she thought. Her end seemed appropriate for the life she had lived.

The endings felt like lessons in fate to how you live your life, those who where selfish and greedy were left to want while those who tried to live without intention to harm or learned to live with more kindness grew happier. I was satisfied with all the characters endings except Haulit’s murder, no one deserves that!

RE: Do you think each of the characters ...

The endings suited the characters. Victor dying alone and afraid fit what had come before. Valentina finding happiness after all she had done and regretted felt right. Even Haulit coming to the end of her relationship with Victor through death instead of flight fit the way she lived her life. She was not a great aunt to Luzia, but more importantly, she traded her life and freedom for a house and goods. Her attempt to be free came far too late and after too much had been done to harm others. I loved that Fortun lost his magic and was stuck in the life he cheated his way into. And, of course, I loved that Luzia and Santangel were finally free to live and love in their own way, away from persecution and enslavement.

I agree with jos...their fates matched the lives they led.

Actually, I think each of the fates of the main characters were exactly as they deserved. Maybe Huitt/The Widow was a little rushed and unfair. However, I would have preferred a slow progression on each's fate, when in fact, their endings were described in brief paragraphs at the end. Decidedly not satisfying.

RE: Do you think each of the characters ...

I believe Victor got what the DeParedes line deserved after he lost the luck of Santangel. Hualit was selfish, but I didn't feel like she deserved her fate in the end. As far as the ending described for both Luzia and Santangel, it felt rushed and very short so I would have liked a little bit more to describe their fate. However, I was happy that they were able to escape and live out their lives.
