Emile (a real figure in history) seemed to have everything (profession, well-off family, mistresses), but seemed to see the worst in every situation. Until he met Cait, perhaps.

I don;t think Emile was either. He seemed to me to be depressed about his life as though he had no say in his future. He didn't have the courage to fight for Cait and what he wanted. He could not stand up to his mother. She made the way easier for him, too little too late. In his own way, he was also restricted by societal values as the ladies. He knew what he wanted, but didn't have the courage to go and a get it. He couldnt even fire Jamie when he needed to
