How does David respond to the anti-Semitism he encountered throughout his life? Do you think his role as an attorney offers him more protection against discrimination compared to other members of his family?

RE: How does David respond to the anti-...

David and his brother built good reputations which helped defuse the anti-semitism they faced. They both were upstanding citizens who earned respect, and they kept their heads down to avoid facing racism/anti-semitism. David lived his life trying to be as private as possible, Marshall was more selfless, community oriented, and friendly. Marshall had strong friendships within his community and was and well liked, which provided a buffer. David provided an important service and knew secrets, but did not seem to have many friends.
They were aware they would have to deal with anti-semitism, just as others will inevitably have to deal with racism. You can fight everyone, or turn the other cheek. You have to pick your battles.

I agree with Ruthiea. David provided a quality service people needed so he was somewhat valued. He was involved in the community and earned respect. However, he lived a very quiet life, in a very private home. Marshall left home rather young and did not return until recently. However, he built up a reputation as a caring, professional and had built friendships across class, and racial lines as a young man. Each had found a way to work with and live with the antisemitism they faced. Interestingly, they were of different generations and I wonder how much a role if any, that played in the level of antisemitism they faced.

I think it was his personal reputation and stature in the community more than the fact that he was an attorney that may have given him some level of protection from anti-Semitism.

Anti-semitism succeeds best in a place where the individual is not known and general hate has no face. David and Marshall both were known and respected in their community. This made it hard to treat them with the hate and disrespect of racism.

Uncle David is a gentleman and a classy dresser. He is characterized as an attorney who is trusted to be fair and honest. He dots all the i's and crosses all the t's. He also has a sense of humor about the anti-Semitic attitudes. He tells Marshall to remember that they are Jews, but not like the New York Jews.

I would have liked to see Uncle David as a different character, ideally younger. He could be droll, even laconic about being the silver-tongued Jewish lawyer who stayed in town, played the old southern boy network, and made buckets of cash, while his brother went off to Chicago to save the world.
