I think the characters had to have resilience.

Resilience is definitely a theme in the book and can be seen in the lives of several of the characters, most especially in Rosie who seemed to find a way to pick herself up and continue on, despite experiencing a series of terrible events within a few short years. Her ability to dig deep and move on was impressive.
I was taken by surprise at the number of events in Helen’s life, especially during the war when Brigitta was taken away by the Germans to a “safe” place. Helen could have done nothing after learning of Brigitta’s outcome. Instead, she channeled her energy into speaking up and out about eugenics, in educating others and in writing a book in the hope that these harmful events are never repeated.

Resilience was a dominant theme throughout the book, seen especially through the character of Rosie. Rosie was a child who experienced the trauma of losing her family, being mistreated by her guardians, virtually held prisoner in the "hospital," and subjected to other injustices. The theme is skillfully paralleled by the injustices inflicted in Nazi Germany where survival required constant resilience.

Absolutely resilience was a major theme as demonstrated by Rosie, Helen and Amaryllis. All three had to accept what they could not change and stand up for their beliefs. I admired Rosie as she could have been so beaten down that she gave up on herself, but she picked herself up and made her way as best she could.

I definitely believe resilience is a theme in this book. Rosie, Helen, and Amaryllis displayed this. Through their strength in the face of adversity, they were able to transcend difficulties that might have defeated them. I personally admire the quality of resilience and think it is sometimes overlooked in our society. We need it even when not faced with trauma and pain.
