Cal tells Joe to never trust someone who isn't moved by song. Do you think this is fair? Do you agree? What's your relationship to music? Is there a particular piece of music that moves you?

There is something to Cal's statement, just as I've applied it to those who don't like books or reading. Music and literature are pure art, and for those who don't like either, well...to me it says something about their souls. They are joyless. Perhaps that is an over-generalization, but art provides the tailwind that lifts up our spirit and allows it to soar.

While I love music, I don't think that trust is built on a person's preferences. I listen and enjoy music that suits my preferences and needs of the moment, from country to classical. I prefer piano classical music, and light opera.

I do think this is a fair assessment. While none of us is moved - in the sense of finding something spiritual - by every piece, we do have visceral responses to most pieces, good or bad.

I do think this is fair. There is a connection between music and emotional experiences that a person can relate to and be moved by. I find it interesting that the music I am most moved is in my mother tongue.

I definitely agree with Cal, but that could be because I'm a musician and music is who I am and how I express myself.

I don't think it's fair. Different things move different people, The important thing is that something moves you. I do love music and Somewhere Over the Rainbow moves me every time.

Yes I agree as they would not have empathy, sympathy, or any emotional ties to anyone.

I think this is not really fair, but then I feel that way about books and reading so maybe I am unfair also.

I would definitely question someone who could not think of one song that moved them (good or bad). I like to think we all have many songs that remind us of specific moments in time, people, places, etc. For me, music is a huge part of my life, including my emotions. A tear comes to my eye every time I hear What A Wonderful World...the song I danced to with my father on my wedding day. There are SO many connections to music.

I always say you can’t trust someone that doesn’t like chocolate, dogs and music. But that said, I still think you can “trust” someone who doesn’t have an emotional connection to music or art. You may not want to invite them to accompany you to cultural events.
So many pieces of music move me, such as Samuel Barber’s Adagio for Strings or Variations on an Original Theme known as the Enigma Variations by Edward Elgar.

It’s probably possible to trust someone even though they’re not affected by music, but I also think something essential is missing in a person’s inner core being if they are never moved by music. I don’t even know how one can be fully human and not be affected by music. I think we are wired for it. So many pieces of music have the power to influence or touch or alter or transform my mood. Indeed memories and music are inextricably linked.

I think this shows how important music is to Cals life and his art. I happen to agree that usually a person is able to find at least one song that moves them and makes them feel something more than just the lyrics. I’ve personally only ever met one person who said they didn’t like music, and it does seem strange that a person could not find any type of music to connect to when there are so many different genres.

I agree wholeheartedly. Music has always and will always be a very important component in my life. I listen to most any genre, and what I choose to listen to is an extension to where I am at that moment in time.
