Do you agree that Leo's investigation is "spying," as he puts it? Do you believe he's justified in his actions? What would your first thoughts have been if you'd been in his shoes?

Leo first begins to suspect that Emma hasn't been honest about her past when he discovers documents she's hidden. Do you agree that his investigation is "spying," as he puts it? Do you believe he's justified in his actions? What would your first thoughts have been if you'd been in his shoes?

RE: Do you agree that Leo's ...

The graduation gowns of the wrong color really started Leo’s active quest for clarification. It was one of those strange details that would nag until cleared up. Looking for the missing documents came first, but adding the graduation inconsistencies really made him more of a detective. I didn’t think of it as spying, but as a search for the answers to things not right with facts he thought Emma had given him honestly. I might have asked her sooner, as I don’t think I could have connected with people that had answers as well as he did.

He had to do it! When it all doesn't add up with a spouse, ya gotta pry a little. And, as we learned it was NOT because Emma/Emily was an axe murderer. All forgivable, per Leo, so it seems.

I think that its usage here goes along with the fact that the author is from the UK. They tend not to mince words. He is so honest that he feels that is what he is doing. He is spying as far as I am concerned.

No! Leo honestly uncovered facts that didn't match with the history he'd been told. The graduation picture was the seed that started unraveling details of Emma / Emily's past that she had never shared with her husband. I think his search for answers was justified due to concern for his wife, his daughter, and his own mental health.

Leo's job was of an investigative nature. It was only natural for him to investigate when he was aware that information wasn't correct.

I do believe he was justified in spying or investigating his wife. I would have done the same.

I don't think it turned into so-called "spying" until Leo looked at Emma's phone, but even then, he knew she was hiding a major secret and couldn't get a truthful answer from her. There was no other way to find out the information.

I don't consider it spying. But when in a committed relationship, honesty is important. In my opinion, he was trying to find out why she would lie to him. Completely justified.

Leo didn’t set out to spy. He was doing a job and when he discovered inconsistencies he became curious and then suspicious. I think anyone would have pursued these inconsistencies. Truth is king and I think anyone would have followed up. Lies about small details within a marriage would definitely be a red flag and would necessitate a search to find out about possible major things

It was research that turned into spying. Plus, Emma's lies early in the story really left him with no other option if he wanted to figure out the truth. Making him a obit writer was a clever way to make that happen.
