Pearl is much more "modern" than Honey. What did you think of their differences, and their strengths and vulnerabilities? Did you find one woman's lifestyle more attractive than the other's?

Honey's interactions with the far more sophisticated Pearl show a glimpse into innocence and youth, the old land waking up to modernism creeping in, and the mountainfolk caught between their old hard ways and the new advanced world. Though Honey has been well educated by Book Woman Cussy in writing, reading, and more, her isolated life has held her back in other ways. Honey's new friend Pearl is far ahead of her with modern gadgets, young men, parties, and drinking. What did you think of their differences, their strengths and vulnerabilities, and their adjustments to new environments? Did you find one woman's lifestyle more attractive than the other's?

RE: Pearl is much more "modern"...

To be completely honest I found Pearl to be a bit contrived. The new woman ready to forge ahead in the man’s world with no obstacle too big, plus her seemingly easy slide from a home with tv, regular balanced meals, bathroom, and freshly ironed fashionable clothes into the rough circumstances of her job and problems.

RE: Pearl is much more "modern"...

She seemed like a young woman who pictured herself at the forefront of a movement to further opportunities for women. I have no doubt that she was smart and courageous. I’d like to revisit Pearl in a few years to see if her youthful ardor has cooled and she is back to a more traditional role.

RE: Pearl is much more "modern"...

I think it was a good contrast for the book. Honey really needed someone to help her along the way and once she lost Retta there really was no one. Pearl stood in for the older sister to be able to teach Honey a little bit about the way of the world.

When younger, Pearls lifestyle would have appealed to me - the more knowing way of life, on the move, doing new things. However now - it would be Honey. Laid back, leave me alone, let me just enjoy nature and the days as each one dawns., very relaxed and peaceful.

RE: Pearl is much more "modern"...

Although Pearl is more "modern" than Honey, I feel that if push came to shove and times got tough, Honey would definitely be more likely to survive those tough times than Pearl. She was accustomed to getting by and doing without.
