What is Ti Me's role in the novel? What does she teach Libertie?

Ti Me is the one person who seemed to bridge some of the gap between the Chase family and Libertie. She was the only one who lived in Haiti since a child, without any influence from America or the outside world. She knew the customs and the culture of her people and Libertie wanted to learn more from her. There wasn’t necessarily much warmth between her and any of the characters but she did allow Libertie to stay with her in the shed..not that she did have much say in the matter…

Ti Me was able to keep Libertie grounded in reality. I think Ti Me appreciated Libertie’s streak of independence though she didn’t fully approve of Libertie’s resistance. She was also a living example of proving that you can overcome extreme adversity. I think Ti Me inspired Libertie to believe that she would be ok if she went back home.
