What do you think is the greatest threat to Caroline and Marc's marriage?

Caroline and Marc seem to have a supportive and happy marriage. Yet even their relationship falls prey to temptation at the summer house. What do you think is the greatest threat to their marriage?

The greatest threat to their marriage is their inability to discern who are good people and who are bad people. They are excited to know movie producers and directors. Their values are totally out of whack. I do not believe that they will stay married due to the assault on Julia.

Agree with Janeh. Mostly Marc though. Caroline is a victim.

Marc's character has underlying faults. He is self-indulgent, secretive, unfaithful, and unable to make good, moral judgements. All of these flaws are kept under control and the Summer House and the guests there serve as a catalyst to release the inhibitions that have kept these flaws in control.

Narcissism is the greatest threat. Self involvement is a close second. They do not communicate on any emotional level.

This marriage seemed really off kilter to me from the beginning and though they both seem to be devoted to the two girls the rest of their lives seemed very shallow. He is playing big important doctor and social butterfly all the time and Caroline seems to care for and about her girls but is somewhat out of focus most of the time and certainly not strong enough or smart enough to see Marc for what he is.

I have to agree with janeh. They were unsuited from day one. Marc's blatant infidelity, without a grain of concern for the fact he was married, was only an essence of what was ahead for them.

Marc has all the emotional commitment of Don Draper on "Mad Men". He good to trust until he meets another female. No relationship skills.

Marc is the greatest threat since he is not trustworthy or truly moral. Good analogy from pennyp that Marc is a Don Draper. To that I would add, a Don Draper in the latter episodes when he started getting weirder.

Oh, gosh, Marc. Caroline liked to be attractive to another man; just human nature. But Marc wanted to act. No scruples.

Marc is the greatest threat although he perceives Ralph to be a problem. Ralph is transparent about what he is thinking but Marc is very worried about appearances and he is dishonest.

Ennui. They both seem bored, shallow and drifting -- unwilling to take decisive action to change their course.

Marc is by far the biggest threat to his own marriage. He cheats on his wife, exhibit a, seemingly squashes her ambition, to further his own interests, and tries to cover a daughters rape, again, to protect himself. If Marc's life implodes, he's most definitely the one holding the explosives.

Everyone has posted very insightful remarks: I agree with all; I have nothing to add.

Marc is mostly, but Caroline seems detached in a way.

Marc's life is a lie, and his secret being is destined to destroy his marriage. He is a husband without respecting women or the idea of fidelity, he is a father without respecting the primacy of his children's well being, he is a doctor without respecting humanity. The stress, tension and angst created by the disconnect between who Marc is and pretends to be will tragically explode apart every significant relationship in his life.
