I loved Sadie and her spirit. Through all the abuse and hardships with Roy and her grandmother, she never stopped caring for her baby, her neighbors or life. I wanted her to find happiness away from her situation. I also loved Birdie and Kate. They were strong women who protected those around them without care for their own safety. They cared about others. I also liked Jerome, who quietly went about his tasks while keeping an eye out for those who might need his protection. He was a good man.

I think Sadie would be the obvious choice as most lovable and admirable but I was drawn to Birdie and her quirkiness. She was a midwife, historian, story-teller, and naturalist. Birdie was important to Sadie's salvation by first keeping an eye out and protecting Kate because she knew what an education could do for Sadie. She was also well aware of the evil that Roy was and found a way to help Sadie get rid of him for good.

I found something lovable in all the characters except Prudence, Roy and Billy. The community was so small and everybody knew everybody's business, yet they found ways to help each other and get along with one another. Even Gladys had her good moments, because her behavior was so predictable.

Eli Perkins is an admirable character - his devotion to his community as evidenced by his desire for the children to have a good education is evidence of his goodness and love. He recognizes that education is the key to making lives better in Baines Creek. I also found Sadie to be admirable - she was determined to improve her lot in life and recognized that helping others also helps the helper. Marris, a very lovable character, taught her that. Kate is admirable, in my opinion, for her quest to continue learning so that she can best serve the community she has committed to, and her honesty is also admirable. Birdie's strength and perseverance and knowledge are admirable. She may be the backbone of the entire community and while her actions don't shout love, they show it.

Marris was the first person introduced who showed love in her heart for Sadie. Her attitude was always positive and accepting of those around her. Roy, Billy and Prudence seemed to be the most negative of the characters. They were so wrapped up with their own agendas that kindness never became a part of their personalities.

There were many lovable and admirable characters in the book. They far out shadowed the evil ones. Sadie, of course was lovable, you wanted only the best for her and rooted for her through all her difficulties. Eli was admirable, as preacher he cared for and believed in his people, believing that someone was going to come along and help with that "stone soup". I love Birdie, for all she knew and all she shared and how she watched over Kate without a word of judgement for anyone, And of course Kate, who kept on doing what she came for and at the same time, learning so much about herself. Did I mention Marris, who made it her mission to help others.

I really enjoyed & respected both Birdie & Kate. Both seemed to be doing as much as possible to make life better for their neighbors. Neither gave into gossip or petty actions against others. Both were looking out for Sadie and instilling an inner strength within her via their caring actions and words of kindness.

I admired Sadie Blue's fighting spirit. She overcame her troubled home life. An unintended pregnancy forced her into an abusive relationship with Roy, who destroyed the precious few things she held dear (including her radio), ultimately murdering their unborn child. Despite of, and possibly because of, Roy's repeated betrayals, Sadie became a stronger woman and decided she deserved better. Sadie plotted to kill Roy using Birdie's knowledge of poisonous herbs, but Billy killed Roy out of love for Sadie. She had the final say when she told Billy to drink the (poisoned) liquor.

I believe that Eli, Kate, Sadie and Birdie were all admirable.

Eli still had doubts, but he tried his best and tried to see the best in others.

Kate was able to take matters into her own hands. She not only taught, but was willing to learn. She gave support when and where it was needed.

Birdie was just a wise old owl. She supported the "good" people.

And Sadie - shy as she was and for as long as she withstood the cruel behavior, she was still innocent. She tried to do the right thing and kept getting knocked down. Under better circumstances she could have grown very quickly and been very lovable.
