Why do you think Raco decided to trust Falk and allow him to help with the investigation?

I think because Raco was new to the town, it made him open to accepting help where he could find it. Raco sensed that Falk had knowledge gained from when he lived on the town and this could be of use in these horrific murders.

Raco, new to the community and to the job, probably felt he had to maintain control, but as he comes to know and trust Aaron more, he sees that they both have shared investigation experience. In addition he recognizes Aaron's knowledge of the town and its people and past history and sees how this can benefit the investigation. He quite simply needs a partner and Aaron fills the bill.

Raco being an outsider knew there in small towns there is always information no one would speak to an outsider about but may help the investigation so he needed someone to assist him gain this knowledge. It also helped that Falk had established himself as a skilled investigator in the city.

Gerry and Barb Hadler were respected in the town. They requested that Falk investigate the financial papers of Luke and Karen. Raco felt he might need some expert answers in that subject. I think Raco felt Falk was a kindred spirit. And intuition.

Falk is a hometown boy. Even though his past is troubled he still knows the area, the people and the history. Falk needed someone to help that he could trust and Falk fit the bill and his badge didn't't hurt.

The partnering was a call Raco made. Intuitive, but also practical. Here is a "native" and a participant who is also in police work and who can help. I see the sequels coming with Raco as revered as his own father was in another town. Some clearing up needs to occur to get closure for the characters. The reader got it but the characters didn't. From there, Falk can get on another mystery to solve and we will be thrilled to go along.

I think that Raco realized what a small town is. He knows that Falk could be helpful given his connection to the town and Falk's current job. When Falk ask how long has Raco been there, Gretchen states, " He only here about five minutes when all this happened." ( page 14)
As being a cop, despite being young, Raco had the training of a cop. Most cops have a brain. There was no hint of Raco being the stereotypes of small-town cops. Nor was there any hit that Raco might have been a bad cop before he took this job. I think Raco showed signs of being a good cop.

I agree with most of the reposes. Raco was new in town and needed someone to bounce his theories off. and Falk had the advantage of being in Law Enforcement. I really think that cops find it easier to talk to other cops about cases they are working on even when there is no apparent connection between them.

I think Raco needed someone who was familiar with the town and some of its people to help him with the investigation and Falk could do that. And with Falk being in Law Enforcement he might be able to be a mentor to him.

Raco himself had some concerns with the immediate rush to judgement. He wasn't entirely sure that Luke did kill his family and then himself. Falk wasn't either. Raco needed someone willing to listen to an alternate theory or at least be open minded. Falk seemed to be that person. Even though Falk was from the town, he was just as much an outsider as Raco. It can get lonely in a new, strange place by yourself. They needed each other.

Raco was still new to the town so he was not as swayed by the rumors about Falk. In addition, he was distrusted by the town so he could likely sympathize with Falk for the small town prejudices. Lastly, Raco knew that Falk was asked by his friend's mom to determine the truth behind the murders and Raco knew Falk would be driven to do his best to do so.
