I heartily agree that gaming knowledge isn't necessary to enjoy this book. It is a deep dive into human nature and how emotions can affect decisions.

As a former computer program designer I could really relate to the excitement and personal pride Sadie felt in creating her games. I enjoyed having game designers as protagonists which I've never seen before.

The relationship among the 3 characters was believable but I think the resolution took too long. Also, I think Sam grew as a character over the course of the book, but Marx and Sadie really didn't.

I had high expectations for this book because I loved Zevin’s “The Storied Life of AJ Fikry”; however, this book was not for me and after about committing to 60% of it, I set it aside. I really enjoyed the gaming portion of the book, the discussions about game design, development, and strategy were fascinating to me —— this thread made the book unique, but the characters were not likeable and their relationships were tedious.

I could have used more background in gaming to understand the context of the relationships between Sam, Sadie, and Marx. The games were certainly "characters" in the storyline which affected each of them differently. Having little to no experience with video games, I often struggled to understand or visualize the impact of how the games were so integral to their lives.
