RE: How do you think Lucy and William ...

Clearly, Lucy's entire life was affected by being raised in poverty but also by being unloved and abused. I think Lucy was quite naive most of her life and easily looked for and accepted love in any form it could be found. William was so hurt to learn about his half sister and to realize that he did not really know his mother or father the way he wanted to know them. I think this lack of really knowing them resulted in him being a shallow man. However, he seemed to have loved his mother very much and so was a good father to his children. I did not see that Bekka and Chrissy were negatively affected by the divorce.

These childhood experiences the author states significantly affected the mature characters. These early life experiences clearly are the source of conflicts in the novel. The positive sign the author gives us is that the cycle probably has been broken in the next generation. What allowed that makes a deeper analysis and understanding of all these characters important. Overall, the portrayal of the main characters has wide appeal, because so many are virtually enslaved to a past with which they cannot reconcile. Much can be accomplished just by the recognition of this fact and setting a new course.

RE: How do you think Lucy and William ...

I think Lucy, initially, was affected by her trauma such that she did not feel self value. William's parenting caused him to be a bit selfish and set in his ways. He became disappointed in his mother after finding out that he was not the only child. I think Lucy and William's children were affected by their parents but I think Lucy's walking away from mental abuse, ultimately, makes the girls stronger.
