"We used to be really close, though .... Like we were the same person." Bree and Beth each remark on how dissimilar they are now—have they really grown that far apart?

Bree and Beth have made different choices in their lives. They have grown in some ways to be the antithesis of the other. Bree has worked hard, gone to university, and gotten a job with a good, well-respected firm. Beth has become addicted to drugs and alcohol, left university, and gone to jail for stealing. At the core, however, they are sisters and, as such, take care of each other against others.

Even today with twins being 3% of the population, there are still myths and stereotypes that surround them. Doctors and researchers continue to discover new information to either prove or disprove past beliefs about twins. So when the author used twins in her book, it was no surprise to me that they would be both similar and dissimilar based on life experience, genetics, and other external factors.

I think often twins, triplets, etc have a difficult time discovering their own identity apart from their siblings. This can lead to very different approaches to life. This is what’s happened to Bree and Beth but in the end they are still sisters

Their choices in life are certainly dissimilar. Bree felt shame and disappointment at Beth's decisions. However, Beth was the one smart enough to copy the same files Alice was requesting. She realized her wrongs of the past and was willing to go back to school in the end. Bree was willing to cover Alice's death believing that Beth was the cause. I think she did that to try to protect Beth. They loved each other but had many walls to surmount to rebuild the relationship.

They have their differences but they are still, sisters. I first thought they had not only grown apart but the love was gone. I was wrong. It only through this tragedy that loves between them are shown.

They appear - as the novel develops - to be direct opposites of one another. Even visually they are very different - one trim and the other stout. And Bree seems to feel she is the better of the two with her education and her upwardly mobile career path - but in the end, they stand together - look out for one another and see each other through a tough time. When times get tough the tough get going and they both did, as is expected of twins/sisters.

They have grown apart over the years, in part due to different choices they’ve made and different lifestyles. It’s hard for Bree to accept that her sister is a drug addict, but this trip throws them together and makes Bree realize that she still loves Beth and is willing to cover for her. In the end, there is hope that their relationship is on the mend.
