Why do you think Rachel seeks out Tyrell at the chess match in Washington Square?

She wanted to sit and talk with someone who knows how it feels to be such an outsider. To be judged just because you are Black or a Jew is what they have both lived with. I think she trusted him and hoped for some type of friendship. I also think she was playing match maker and hoping to have some impact on him contacting Naomi.

I also agree that Rachel connected with Tyrell as another outsider. She confided things to him that she had not even told her therapist because she felt that he would understand her struggles more than any of the other characters. She wanted Tyrell to know how much Naomi missed him, so maybe he would rethink their break up. She wanted them both to be happy, and got her thinking that maybe if an outsider like Tyrell could be happy, then maybe an outsider like her could be happy too.

I feel she felt he would understand her feelings better than others because he had been though bad times. Also, I think she had problems with understanding why her husband was so against him. Maybe it was also to help her understand why the Germans hated to Jews so much.
