Is it my imagination or do Hakim and his entire family seem to be operating on a more intellectual basis - they seem to me to be better educated. Their approach to life is more organized and systematic, whereas Abu-Laith seems scattered, less rational, more emotional and his family life more scattered in every way.

I think I would agree with you susiej; the two families have very different experiences because they handled it in completely opposite ways.
Abu Laith is definitely more easily influenced by his emotions, whereas Hakam operates more from a logical and rational point of view.

I have to agree with susiej’s comments...Abu lives in a very ‘out-loud’ manner, basing his actions on emotions. Hakim’s family is the opposite...logical and cautious.

Abu Laith is confrontational by nature, always stirring up emotions, getting in fights, creating a whirlwind atmosphere. His wild orange hair and his large stature add to his impact on those around him. Hakam and his wife were lawyers, more sedate in nature, and more educated and erudite than Abu Laith and his family.

I agree with susiej - they have two different experiences because of how they handle situations. Hakam keeps his emotions in check and handles situations logically whereas Abu does not.

There was a vast difference in educational levels which definitely made some difference. Hakam and his family were more rational in their thinking. Even though they did not agree with ISIS rule they knew enough to keep quiet and not cause problems. Abu Laith on the other hand was very emotional and passionate. He could be impulsive and reactive before thinking a situation through. Abu Laith tended to speak his mind and did not care what others thought. This made him more of a target with his neighbors and ISIS.
