John Balzar Biography
John Balzar is a Senior Features Writer at the Los Angeles Times. During his 23 years with the newspaper, he has been an opinion page columnist, roving national correspondent, Nairobi bureau chief, Seattle bureau chief, political writer and statehouse reporter. Balzar previously wrote for the San Francisco Chronicle and United Press International. During the summer of 2004, he was assigned to cover the 2d battalion of the 7th Marines during operations in Iraq. He covered the first Gulf War with a U.S. Army aviation brigade, and followed the U.S. Marines during operations in Somalia. Additionally, he has covered war, insurrection and the aftermath in 10 African countries. He was a sergeant in the U.S. Marines in Vietnam. Balzar is the author of Yukon Alone, a story of life and adventure in the Far North.
