Erich Segal, the author of Love Story (the top selling work of fiction in 1970 and the top box office attraction of 1971) died on Sunday from a heart attack at home in London aged 72.
Segal was a classics professor at Yale University when he wrote the book, which became an Oscar-winning 1970 film starring Ryan O'Neal and Ali MacGraw. Interestingly, Segal first wrote the screenplay but, unable to sell it, was advised to turn the script into a novel.
Segal's daughter, Francesca, said her father had suffered from Parkinson's disease for many years.
New York-born Segal also wrote the screenplay for the Beatles' animated film Yellow Submarine.
