In chapter 35, Johannes tells Helen he assumes full responsibility for what happened to Brigitta, and yet Helen assures him they all failed her. What did she mean?

Helen’s intense anger toward Johannes in chapter 35 touched on not just a lack of courage, but also spoke to the complacency and compliance they both had. She blamed Johannes when she said ”You objected to nothing, you challenged nothing!…you furthered their cause…Every time you did nothing to stop the madness, you were pushing it forward.” As she finished yelling at Joanne, she quickly “felt the barb” in her chest and acknowledged to herself that she always knew could have done more. Though unspoken, Helen knew she too failed Brigitta when her inner voice questioned whether she have should spoken with the German soldier about Brigitta’s health.
