Farah approaches Geeta for help in doing away with Samir. What would you have done if placed in Geeta's position?

When Farah comes to Geeta and asks for her help in doing away with Samir the same way she supposedly rid herself of Ramesh, Geeta realizes that the reputation she's leaned on to help build her new life has now become a double-edged sword. What do you think you would have done if you were placed in Geeta's position?

In real life I would not have done what she did, but given her life, her need for the support of the other women in town and her understanding of how awful it is to be with a cruel husband, I probably would have done what Geeta did.

I can't imagine. I've never been and will never be in such a position. I do feel tremendous sympathy for Farah's plight; I guess in the U.S, climate in which I live I would have called the police, which wouldn't have helped if they were owned by men like Farah's husband.

My experience is radically different from Geeta’s. She was victim of severe physical and emotional abuse, and her community let it happen repeatedly because of the commonly held view that domestic abuse is an issue between a husband and wife and others shouldn’t interfere. I’ve never experienced anything remotely similar. I have sympathy with the women wanting to “off” their brutal, despicable husbands in a culture that seems to give the women no other recourse to escape their victimization. In my situation, I do have recourse - though the U.S. justice system is imperfect, it is responsive to domestic abuse. Additionally, my community and culture offer a number of support mechanisms for women subjected to domestic abuse.

Never having been in that position, I do not know how I would react.
I believe the author handled it well.

Greeta had to take it on. Otherwise, instead of being a black comedy, this book would have just been a dark story.

In real life I would have tried to help her find other solutions. None being available in that place and time, who knows.

I'm not sure what I would have done. In addition to what was happening to Farah, Geeta was at risk as well. And in a country where women are so totally disrespected, I can see having to take matters into my own hands. Tough decision.

This is an impossible question to answer. Thankfully, I am very far removed from the circumstances in which these women find themselves. I can’t imagine helping some kill another person. I would be more likely to help Farah escape, though how I would do that, I do not know.

I would have told her to find someone else. Geeta was already persona non grata so nothing would change if she refused. It would be a hit not to have Farah pay her back but why risk jail for money? And let the others pick up Farah's debt.

Tough as I’m not it that cultural situation so easy for me to say I would not have done it their way but would have helped her leave him no matter what. We really never know what we are capable of or how we would react until we are in a real life situation where our lives are endangered!

I agree with crk who says, "Greeta had to take it on. Otherwise, instead of being a black comedy, this book would have just been a dark story." Helping Farah is part of the story.

I would have reacted as Geeta did and said no. Farah was assuming Geeta had murdered someone before, so it wouldn't be a big deal when the reality is that she hadn't.

I have a hard time thinking I could agree to kill someone.

I know Farah was in a bad place, but I would not have helped her kill her husband. I would not have been adverse to helping her and her children flee their home and get to a safe place far away, but killing him is a resounding N-O!.

Murder is not in my wheelhouse, so thankfully society has come up with other options. Domestic violence as a crime is better reacted to now than it has ever been. There are so many differences between Geeta's life style and mine - she did not have a lot of choices, I do.
