Clytemnestra thinks that queens are "either hated or forgotten." She chooses to be "hated forever." Do you think she's correct about how history treats powerful women?

As Queen, even Clytemnestra didn’t get the respect she was due, so it makes sense that the standards of the day would ignore women when possible or vilify when the queen was strong. Fortunately much has changed since then. Through the world, queens and prime ministers are remembered for good work.

I do agree that women in history have been overlooked. In her time period women were not considered important or deserving of respect. Time has changed slowly and still incompletely in this regard. It is only recently that women who contributed with courage, strength and ingenuity have been recognized and sadly only after their deaths for their contributions and sacrifices during WWII and other wars.

I think it is mostly true. All public figures need something that maintains relevance and controversy is usually the easiest thing to remember. If you look at any Royal who has a lasting legacy, they have the most complex reigns and personal lives. In 100 years, will we still remember Elizabeth II? Probably not as closely as we do Elizabeth I or Henry VIII. Would anyone still talk about Marie Antoinette if not for the French Revolution? There are so many royals in every corner of the world that if you are at the status quo, you will likely be forgotten by anyone who does not live through your reign.

I find it interesting that many of these answers compare Clytemnestra to Elizabeth II. Admittedly she is the modern queen that most of us know the most about, but I hesitate to put her in the same category as queens who ruled with a lot of power. The British monarchy is more of a figurehead, or more generously, an interested advisor, to the prime minister. I think she will be remembered not only for the length of her "rule" but also for the love she had for her people and the way she demonstrated that love. So no, I don't think this queen will be forgotten or hated.

Queen Elizabeth 1 comes to mind as a powerful queen who devoted her life to her people: she refused to follow her sister ---Bloody Mary---in making Catholicism Britain's religion because her people didn't want it, and she never married because she didn't want to lose her power as a queen. Casati's Clytemnestra displays love for her people in the way she metes out justice, especially when she defended the father of the girl who was raped.
