Spenser and his brother felt at the least excepted in Springfield and some people did look to them as friends and for assistance. I think even though Chicago may have its appeal for cultural and some if limited economic opportunities I would have chosen Springfield because it was smaller and perhaps I at least at that time would have my community.

I loved these characters in this novel. In fact, all three of the brothers were my favorite. I am certain that if I had lived their lives, I would be eager to try my hand in Chicago. It would be an inviting temptation with more opportunity and freedom than they might ever know. However, in their own way and under the circumstances, they have done well in Springfield. They know what they know there, and they know who they know. They are not young men and while it may seem that their world is changing, it might be better to try experiencing that change in a place and with those whom they know best. I think the comfortable like of the more known at an older age is what I would choose.
