Reverend Magee says, "In another hundred years…I believe that prejudice shall have been banished as a myth and relegated to the dark days of Salem witchcraft." In what ways do you think his prediction has come true, or not?

Reverend Magee says,

Reverend Magee tells his congregation, "In another hundred years…I believe that prejudice shall have been banished as a myth and relegated to the dark days of Salem witchcraft."

In what ways do you think his prediction has come true, and in what ways has it not? Do you think his vision will ever be completely realized? Are there steps we can take to help make it a reality?

His prediction is no closer to coming true in 2023 than it was in the 1860s. As long as humans rule the world I don't think his vision will ever be realized.

I think things are better, although we obviously still have a long way to go. I don't think anyone back then could have imagined a Black president - so certainly there's been some progress. The Black Lives Matter movement highlighted, though, that inequities still exist (more Black women die in childbirth in the US, COVID disproportionally affected the Black population, Black Americans are incarcerated at nearly five times the rate of white citizens, etc.).

Today there are no laws explicitly enforcing prejudicial beliefs and constraints regarding access and opportunities in society but in practice prejudices still exist and affect opportunities for many based on race, religion, class and other factors.

Prejudice has not vanished. Horrifying what is happening to so many African American men and women.

I don’t agree with the Reverend prediction. Prejudice has not been eradicated. We still see it throughout the country. Sad but true.

I agree completely with what others have said before me. Prejudice is still very much a part of our lives in this country, and I suspect in most countries of this world. While we have made great strides in dealing with prejudice against people of color in this country, we are a long way from eradicating this practice altogether. This is not something we can pass laws to eliminate. Recognizing one another as equal in every way is not possible to legislate. And color is not the only prejudice, obviously. Sex, age, religion, size, wealth - all these and many more are areas in which we still see discrimination in this country, unfortunately.

Things are certainly better today than they were in the 1800s. His prediction has come true in that women and non-white people have rights that they did not in Abraham Lincoln's time. However, humans are imperfect, so there is still room for improvement. I view history and culture like a pendulum; it swings one way for a time in history until it reaches a maximum point and swings back the other way. The phenomena occurring now is that we have become so obsessed with the wrongs of the past and so saturated by our enragement that things seem to be getting worse again. We are blinded by the offenses to the point of being unable to hold civil discourse and recognize our commonality. If my prediction is correct, we will one day acknowledge our similarities with our fellow mankind and stop focusing on all of the things that make us different. However, history repeats itself, so this cycle will likely continue until the end of time.

Sadly this prediction has not been realized. Better perhaps, but not even close to being eradicated.

I am sorry to say that his prediction has not yet been fulfilled. Progress has been made, but hatred still exists and poisons our society.

We have come a long way, but we have a long way yet to go. It is now against the law to discriminate against race, color, sex, religion, disability etc, but there is still prejudice. I believe that with each generation there is less and less prejudice. Each generation’s children are more accepting of those who are different from them.

I agree with LS. Discrimination lessens somewhat with each generation, but sadly, it will always exist to some degree.
