Precious Thing
Once I began reading this book I found it difficult to put it down. The plot demanded that you continue right to the surprise ending. The story involves two women who have been friends since they were children. There's a secret about their closeness that is not revealed right away. It is part of the mystery that keeps you reading. What happens to them as adults is the bulk of the novel. It is highly dramatic, very dark and scary in some parts.I don't usually read from this genre but it was a well written book and it kept my attention right up to the very end. I frequently read two books concurrently but could not do so once I began this book. It demanded my attention so that I couldn't concentrate on anything else. I needed to finish this and find out what was happening to these women. When I got to the end I wanted to go back and read the book again so I could remain in the atmosphere that was created in the book. I'll give this book a 3 and a half rating.

Not Gone Girl
Do yourself a favor. If you've read Gone Girl, put it out of your mind before you start reading this book. There are comparisons, but they're two distinctly, different books. This is a suspense/thriller that will hook you with its smart and solid characters. Rachel and Clara have been friends who appear to have shared everything from the moment they met and became friends, but all is not as it appears to be. It's dark and you can feel there's something "not right" about the relationship between the main characters but you can't quite put your finger on it.
This story has an engrossing plot line told in a simple and effective manner. The ending you think should be happening might not be happening because the twist you thought was the twist wasn't a twist at all! There's no way to elaborate without giving too much away so you'll just have to read it for yourself.
I rated this 4 stars but if halves were available for use, I would probably have rated this 3 and a 1/2 stars.

What Attracts us….
I have reviewed several first impression books, but this one seemed to have garnered the most requests for review..
In other words, we like to read about friendship, intrigue, deception and uncertainty….Read it…..it's fun and offers what it promises…truths about friendship, deception, and uncertainty….

Precious Thing
Do you really know your best friend? That is the million dollar question in Precious Thing by Colette McBeth. Rachel, a non-social teenage girl, is befriended by the popular Clara in high school and life changes for her dramatically. Now, in the present day, Rachel is the successful one and Clara is not.
Rachel, a TV reporter, is called to cover a news story of a missing girl. Little did she know that that missing girl is her best friend Clara. Here is where the author captures you, drags you through so many twists and turns that she makes it impossible for you to put down the book. The whole time I was reading Precious Thing the same question kept coming up "How well did Rachel know Clara or even her own boyfriend?" Does anyone really know the people in their lives?
The ending leaves you so surprised that you feel like reading it all over again just to see if you missed a clue.
I loved this book and will be mentioning it to my book club group as a possible future book club read.
Thank you again for allowing me to read and review this fantastic book.

Formulaic
I prefer character-driven novels, so my impressions reflect that. I thought the writing was good, but the plot drove the story. Unfortunately the plot wasn't all that original. If you like a fast-paced suspense novel, this may be the book for you.

Shades of Gone Girl
This book is well-written, with many turns and twists. I was gripped by the story and read it quickly. When I finished, however, I reflected on the many implausible plot turns that make it impossible for me to give it a 5. This is a psychological thriller that builds to an exciting, though unlikely, ending. If you can forgive these questionable surprises, you are in for a fun read. I will recommend it to friends.

Brilliantly Dark and Chilling
Colette McBeth's Precious Thing is a brilliantly dark and chilling story. It grips you from the very start, wondering how two women (Rachel and Clara) got to this place after being friends for so long. Page by page, chapter by chapter, it all comes together in such a way that will have you looking at your own friendships, wondering if such a thing is possible in your own life. The format for the book, a long letter written by Rachel, is ingenious. It gives great insight into her mind while she recounts different events and reminds the reader that not everyone sees or experiences things the same way. A wonderful debut novel from an author whose work I will be looking out for in the future!

Saw This Coming
I wanted to love this book; the premise was intriguing. About midway through "Precious Thing," I thought I'd figured out the ending. I was right. The plot twists were numerous. In the beginning of the story, they made the story interesting. After a while, the never ending twists just became tiresome and predictable. I started the book twice; I found the author's writing style difficult. Rather than focusing on the story throughout the book, I was distracted by the cadence of the writing. In a beautifully written book, I love being aware of the writing, Sadly, this was not the case with "Precious Thing."
