As a lover of gothics, I was a bit sceptical when I started this book. Having grown up with REBECCA, I knew what a true gothic was. Happily this lived up to my expectations. It was indeed suspensful and haunting. Sara Foster gives you everything. Two brooding men, a heroine you care about and a tragic mystery. The setting in the North Yorkshire moors was just an extra bonus.

I've struggled with writing this review because I liked the story, I really did. I didn't figure out the ending which is always a good thing when it comes to mysteries. The setting proved to be a character in itself; that's a plus in my book. But the narrative lacked a sophistication I've come to expect in a British mystery. I'm sure experience is the key to improving this. Conversation seemed a little simplified and didn't flow in a way that felt normal or expected. The plot headed in the right direction but sometimes seemed filled with gaps--a little more exploration into personalities and details would have enhanced the read. Still, the basic premise was intriguing and I wanted to finish the book, so I lean on the positive side of a 3 for this debut novel.

Richly atmospheric, gothic undertones, the setting of the desolation of Yorkshire moors all set the tone for this mystery by Foster. When I first started reading it I didn't know if I was reading a ghost story or a regular mystery that needed solving. There are plenty of ghosts and haunting mentioned for sure and really either of the scenarios would have played out and been very believable. Secrets from the past, the slow unveiling of clues, and very interesting and well rounded characters kept me reading late into the night. And let me tell you reading this at night when the house was so quiet really ratcheted up the creepiness factor. Looking forward to seeing what this author writes next.

I was excited about getting to review this book - it sounded very interesting. The book grabbed me from the beginning, making me want to continue reading to find out hat happened. The author was great at bringing the characters to life. I just thought that it started to drag a little bit toward the end, and then all of a sudden, the twist was there and then the book ended.
Overall, it was a decent book and I'd be interested to read another book by this author.

This mystery is set in the northern wilds of England. Grace's husband disappeared a year prior while out walking their infant. The baby was returned unharmed in her carriage, but her father never came back. While Grace is trying to find some answers, she discovers she may not have known her husband as well as she thought she did. In a nice touch, while staying in this scary, old house she reads Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier.

I enjoyed this book because I like a good scare and the author, Sara Foster, was able to do this by creating an eerie setting that was described as cold, remote, and spooky with a plot and set of characters that were wrapped in a mystery. The book kept my attention, throughout, but the ending was a little too neatly sewn up. It was a pleasure read, but not one that would lead to a hearty book discussion. Foster is a great descriptive writer, though, and I would like to read other books by her; maybe something in the horror genre.

Grace and Adam move to the cottage once owned by his grandparents on the Yorkshire moors. Grace is not really thrilled with the setting but she has no idea what is to come. Adam mysteriously disappears after going on a walk with their infant daughter Millie. Millie is found safe in front of the cottage but there is not a trace of Adam. Grace returns to the cottage months later to finalize things and to see if she can find any answers to the burning question: what happened to Adam?

This book had good twists and turns and I did not really see the ending coming. The characters were interesting and complex. I felt for Grace and wanted her to get some sort of closure about her missing husband. This book was a good mystery and had some hints of romance in it as well. I recommend this book.

From the beginning to the end, Beneath the Shadows is loaded with atmosphere and suspense and lots of fascinating occurrences..a baby carriage left on a porch, a missing husband and unusual neighbors.
The brutal winter in the Yorkshire Moors added to the suspense and mystery. It was fun to try and figure out what was going to happen as I was reading along.
I would definitely recommend the book. Beneath the Shadows would make a wonderful movie.
