I found myself smiling as I read on...
This work is a romance novel with a focus on the romantic relationship between Clair from 1945 Scotland and Jamie from the Scotland of the 1700's. While I am not usually a fan of romance novels, I found myself smiling to myself as I read each chapter. This is a good read that will take you on a journey you won't find in other books.

WOW
This book is amazing...what an adventure! This is a very busy time of the year for me and yet I couldn't put the book down. I especially loved the time travel aspect. I am anxious to continue in the series, my only hesitation being the violence. Outlander is very well written and a pleasure to read.

Brilliant!
"I thought of telling him that his own touch seared my skin and filled my veins with fire." Who wouldn't dream of love like this? Outlander is an exceptional read. Although characterized as a romance, it is so much more. It is a unique, well-written, richly detailed historical work of fiction, full of fantasy and adventure. Before I began reading the book, I wondered if I could really get through 850 pages. The answer is yes - it captured my attention early on and I devoured it within a week! I can't wait to read the rest of the series.

This Lassie is Scotland bound!
I am weary...I have been with Jamie and his lovely Claire every step of their arduous journey through Scotland trying to outsmart our arch nemesis, Lord Randall. The history, the characters, the dialogue, the descriptive scenery, the story line, and yes, the sex, are just wonderfully written. My husband and I are headed to Scotland in June, and this lassie will be searching for the Hill of Craigh na Dun. You will NOT be disappointed with this novel just sad to see the journey end!

The Outlander
Genealogy, history, herbology, romance, & time travel – Wow. All in one book - plus a fascinating story line and characters you would love to meet. As soon as I read the blurb about The Outlander I knew I had to read it.
It’s taking a trip back in time to the Scotland of our ancestors full of intrigue, mystery, romance.
Diana Gabaldon has captured the essence of time travel in her book and the Celtic flavor of a Scotland of the past – I look forward with great anticipation to reading the rest of The Outlander series.

A Sweeping Saga
I enjoyed this sweeping saga very much. It truly does have everything - time travel, history, war, love, lust, humor, excitement. It also has a smart, bold, practical heroine in Claire. And although it ran a little long for me, I'm still happy I read it - and even happier the second book in the series is sitting on my shelf.

Outlandish
While the author has an extensive imagination and a talent with words, I found “Outlander” to be too long and too full of explicit sexual and violent content for my personal taste. In the introduction to the edition I read, the author defines her work as “literature.” I consider literature to be edifying in some way, encompassing a theme or themes that cause the reader to think about some aspect of life; I didn’t find any of that here, just escapist fiction. I understand that this book and its sequels have been very popular. If you are looking for nothing more than entertainment, this might be for you.

An airplane book
As long as you aren't bothered by sexual violence and physical abuse, this would be a perfectly adequate choice for a long plane flight. In that case, its length would be a virtue rather than a defect. This plot-driven story doesn't require much thought or concentration. Unfortunately, its rather pedestrian prose makes it difficult to empathize with the characters.
