Bowker, the official US agency for assigning barcodes, has arrived at a new methodology for calculating the number of titles published each year. For example, their old formula estimated 190,078 titles were published in 2004 versus their new estimate of 295,523. Their official estimate for 2006 is 291,920 books, a 3% increase over 2005. Bowker says the higher number is the result of adding books that were in unclassified subject categories, didn't include prices and had nontraditional bindings.
