Publishers have been expressing their frustration in the wake of the sudden and unexpected dismissal of Barnes & Noble CEO Ron Boire last week, just a year after he took over as head of the largest bricks-and-mortar bookstore chain in the USA. Boire, formerly head of Sears Canada, was deemed "not a good fit for the organization." Len Riggio, B&N’s founder and chairman, is postponing his retirement in order to step up to the helm, once again, until a replacement is found.
Publisher responses to the news that B&N will be looking for its third new leader in three years range from concern that this will impact sales during the crucial holiday season, to surprise given that Boire "seemed to have a plan." Indeed, just two months ago in June, Boire had spent two hours laying out the future of B&N to a group of investors.
