Amazon reviews hijacked by conspiracy theorists and causes

Nov 02 2015

The Seattle Times reports that organized groups are using the Amazon review system to push political and social agendas often only tangentially related to the products being sold. But Amazon appears to have no desire to deal with these reviews saying they are "authentic," and thus have a place on its website.

An example cited by The Seattle Times is the book Choosing Hope: Moving Forward from Life's Darkest Hours written by Sandy Hook Elementary first-grade teacher Kaitlin Roig-DeBellis which has been hit by a concerted attack by conspiracy theorists who think that the Sandy Hook shootings were a hoax, perpetuated by the government to push for tougher gun-control laws.

According to Amazon spokesman Tom Cook: "All authentic reviews, whether the reviewer bought the product on Amazon or not, are valuable to customers, helping them make informed buying decisions every day."
