A Publishing Technology survey of 1000 Millennials (aged 18-34) in the U.S. found that 79% read a print book in the last year, while 46% had read an e-book on a tablet and only 31% had read an e-book on a dedicated e-reader. Millennials also reported reading e-books on phones (36%) and computers (37%).
52% of Millennials buy from chain bookstores, and 45% buy in used bookstores, 53% check out books from libraries. Only 40% claim they buy online. Just 2% reported only buying e-books, and only 9% said they got all their books from free sources.
Word-of-mouth recommendations are important with 45% saying they learn about new books offline. 54% also recommend books and discuss books offline, with just 20% discussing books on social media and in online communities, respectively.
A further 1000 Millennials were surveyed in the UK with, interestingly, significantly different results (which can be seen in the report linked below)
