In a move that has surprised some in the industry, Barnes & Noble announced today that it plans to separate its college business from its retail stores and Nook digital units.
While a split has been on the cards for about a year, it was generally thought that the retail area would be separated off, leaving the college and Nook businesses together; or that the Nook business would be sold off. Instead retail and Nook stay together.
Perhaps the decision to put Nook and retail together, rather than link Nook to the college business, is a result of increasing evidence that college students still prefer to study from print books - see 2/24 news story for more on this.
