When sales of e-books in the USA doubled in 2011 compared with 2010, many in the publishing industry predicted the quick demise of mass market paperbacks*. The predictions looked to be on track when the format sold half as much in 2013 as in 2010. But in 2014 there are signs that sales of the format are stabilizing somewhat.
*The industry distinguishes between trade paperbacks and mass market paperbacks - the former are larger, usually with the same formatting as the hardcover that, traditionally, precedes it. The latter has a smaller format, lower price, and traditionally is printed on cheaper paper. Originally, the bookstore was the province of the trade paperback while mass market paperbacks were found on newsstands.
