This year's 21 MacArthur fellows have been announced including cartoonist and graphic memoirist Alison Bechdel, translator and Poet Khaled Mattawa, poet Terrance Hayes and playwright Samuel Hunter.
MacArthur Fellowships, also known as "Genius Grants" are awarded annually to between 20 and 40 individuals working in any field, who "show exceptional merit and promise for continued and enhanced creative work" and are also US citizens or residents.
The fellowships are designed to be an investment in a person's originality, insight, and potential." Each individual receives $625,000 paid over five years in quarterly installments.
