Author and journalist Michael Hastings died in a car crash in Los Angeles early Tuesday at the age of 33. The author of two nonfiction books about the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, he will probably be best remembered for his Rolling Stone interview with General Stanley McChrystal, then commander of NATO forces in Afghanistan, that eventually led to McChrystal being relieved of his command.
Publisher David Rosenthal said in a statement that Hastings' death "cuts short a life dedicated to speaking truth to power. He was a truthteller, a charming provocateur and a relentless seeker of decency in a nasty world."
