Authors Junot Díaz and Dinaw Mengestu are among the twenty-two people to be awarded MacArthur "genius" grants. The MacArthur Fellows Program awards unrestricted fellowships to talented individuals who have shown extraordinary originality and dedication in their creative pursuits and a marked capacity for self-direction. The award is worth US$500,000 each, paid over a five-year period. Journalist David Finkel (author of The Good Soldiers also won an award.
Award winners cover the gamut from musical instrument makers, scientists and doctors, film-makers and photographers, economists and mathematicians.
