This is a great observation. Said another way, going outside the lines helps to appreciate where the boundaries are. Exceptions tend to stand out because they are exceptions and help us challenge or at least reinforce the rules.

Yes, I do think his point is valid but that depends on what you interpret his point to be. If you believe that by experiencing the “ exceptions” to a rule we then can reshape the rules AND that these prove that It’s always possible there are “ exceptions” to any hard line then I agree.
