I liked Anna. I like that she is growing emotionally as the books progress, that she's able to be more open about her feelings since marrying Jack. I also like how driven she is about practicing medicine and performing surgery, and determined to help other women who wish to do the same.

I loved Sophie - while she is considerably younger than I am, and we do not share a skin color, I relate strongly to her and have great respect and admiration for her. She is old beyond her years, having learned so much from her life experiences. Often when we encounter difficulty, especially when younger, we can become angry, bitter, revengeful. Sophie did none of those. She learned from her experiences and used her knowledge to continue growing in wisdom, to make life better for the world of her time as well as those in her family. She is a hero to women of her time as well as to ours.

I think I liked Anne the best. She seemed to be able to have a life as a wife and a career as a doctor. I believe in the period this book takes place, this would be difficult to do. I respect most of the women in this book for going outside the box and doing what they feel they are meant to do.
