What did you think about the novel's conclusion? Did Nora Smithson's fate seem apt, or would you have chosen a different future for her character?

I was disappointed that Nora’s brother took the blame for all of her crimes. I did feel some compassion for her because of the circumstances that led her to perform those horrible acts, but I wanted them to be acknowledged somehow rather than being swept under the rug. Part of me wanted to see her punished but I also think that facing what had happened would have been a way for her to move toward a place of healing. The light can’t get in if the wound is covered over and ignored.

The novel ended successfully for me as its most major themes and events were “wrapped up.” What was even more exciting for me, however, was what the author left unattended. I feel certain she did that purposely to provide the plot lines for a third novel, a sequel to these events. I think the Sophie’s school project and possible hospital, the children’s future, as well as personal family matters for Sophie and Anna are ripe topics for developing in novel number three.

I think the author definitely left plenty of open story on which to build her next novel but brought to a conclusion several of the main story lines. This book can stand on its own but is also a great part of a series.
I think Nora was too damaged to have recovered from her past especially in that time period. The way Nora was dealt with fit with how the criminally insane were handled.

The ending of the book left me wondering what was next for the people in the story as they all seemed to have a longer path in their lives to follow. I wish I had read some of the previous books concerning the family as I would have a deeper understanding of their aspirations and motivations. The talents of this author are truly amazing.
