What did you think about the novel's conclusion?

What did you think about the novel's conclusion? Did Nora Smithson's fate seem apt, or would you have chosen a different future for her character?

I was not surprised that Nora was found to be insane and feel that she was fortunate to receive care in a better hospital thanks to the generosity of her brother whose death she caused. Very ironic!

As with the first book, Donati wraps up certain plot lines but leaves others open which I find an encouraging sign that she might return with more tales of Waverly Place!

The ending was very satisfying. Loose ends were tied up. However, it is easy to see that the author has lots of material to use for a sequel.

I really enjoyed it. I do wish we could know more about what goes on with Sophie and her endeavors but maybe we will have another book to read about them.

I was disappointed that Nora’s brother took the blame for all of her crimes. I did feel some compassion for her because of the circumstances that led her to perform those horrible acts, but I wanted them to be acknowledged somehow rather than being swept under the rug. Part of me wanted to see her punished but I also think that facing what had happened would have been a way for her to move toward a place of healing. The light can’t get in if the wound is covered over and ignored.

RE: What did you think about the novel's conclusion?

The novel ended successfully for me as its most major themes and events were “wrapped up.” What was even more exciting for me, however, was what the author left unattended. I feel certain she did that purposely to provide the plot lines for a third novel, a sequel to these events. I think the Sophie’s school project and possible hospital, the children’s future, as well as personal family matters for Sophie and Anna are ripe topics for developing in novel number three.

I think the author definitely left plenty of open story on which to build her next novel but brought to a conclusion several of the main story lines. This book can stand on its own but is also a great part of a series.

I think Nora was too damaged to have recovered from her past especially in that time period. The way Nora was dealt with fit with how the criminally insane were handled.

I was alright with the way the story ended. I felt sorry for Nora and her life, but I agree that she should not stand trial. There is more story to tell, so I am thinking that the author is planning another book.

Insanity is very mysterious--if you are insane do you lose the ability to tell right from wrong--are you totally free of consequences to your actions? Something in me was not happy with Nora's fate--too easy.

An Ending That Doesn't End

I have followed this family for many books and know the typical ending that doesn't end. Suits me fine. I can hardly wait to see what's next!

RE: What did you think about the novel's conclusion?

The ending of the book left me wondering what was next for the people in the story as they all seemed to have a longer path in their lives to follow. I wish I had read some of the previous books concerning the family as I would have a deeper understanding of their aspirations and motivations. The talents of this author are truly amazing.
