In what ways was Lucy a good friend to Cheri, and how did she let her down? Do you think she redeemed herself by the end of the novel?

Just by happenstance...Lucy is a kind person and befriended Cheri because no one else did and she felt sorry for her. Because the friendship (as Cheri perceived it) was built on guilt on Lucy's part was the reason she had to find out what happened to Cheri and be a true friend.

I think Lucy was sort of a fair-weather friend to Cheri. She'd talk to her at the bus stop, but wasn't spending much time with her when other friends, whom she liked more, were around. That's sad for Cheri, but at the same time, Lucy was Cheri's only friend and the friendship was valued much more by Cheri than it was by Lucy.

I think she was as good a friend as she was capable of given her age and the circumstances. I think most of us have someone like Cheri in our past to some degree and that is why this book was so interesting. It put into words thoughts and feelings we have about a friend or situation from our own past.

I think Lucy was a caring acquaintance of Cheri's rather than a good friend. And possibly she didn't realize how much Cheri meant to her until Cheri's body was discovered. If Lucy had been a better friend she would have tried to find Cheri after she went missing.
