Unusual

There didn't seem to be any topics with the title of Unusual, so I will just start it by saying The Wonders was an unusual book and I think not necessarily one that I would opt for again. It is very interesting and very timely, however, but may have a limited readership once published. I would be anxious to see how well it really did.........It will probably be a #1 best seller!

RE: Unusual

Thank you Deby for starting this topic. I am not sure I liked this book. It was a weird one, but I'm sure will have a following. I really don't think it will be a #1 best seller though!

RE: Unusual

This is a bit of a sci-fi combined with Disney sort of book to me. Interesting and unusual it is but well enough written to sort of make you realize that although they are very weird they are also very human with all the angst, suffering and ego to go with that. I liked it and sort of despised it at the same time.

RE: Unusual

The book is very unusual and not one I would have chosen to read or necessarily finished except for this book club discussion. I enjoy books where I like at least some of the characters and care enough about them to want to find out what happens. I thought these characters were contrived just to illustrate points the author wanted to explore.

RE: Unusual

I loved the fact that this book was so unusual & unique - I've never read anything like it. I thought it was really intriguing & well done... and once I started it, I didn't want to put it down. I

RE: Unusual

I considered it a fairy tale and then could read it without being critical of any absurdity. Which of course it was, through and through. But I didn't mind reading it and thought it was well written. I did see it online as a book to look for being a best seller. We'll see!

RE: Unusual

I also agree that this book was unusual and one that I would not have finished except for this book group. I did want to find out how it ended though. I have to admit that I do like the cover and that is probably the main reason I requested it.

RE: Unusual

I picked it because of it's unique story premise. I love the comment above that is is a fairy tale. Of course it is!

RE: Unusual

I think the idea of the book is a good one. I am not sure I agree with her choices for storyline. But I think it will be read because the premise is so unusual

RE: Unusual

It was unusual. I was intrigued by the premise. But, a big but: I wished the characters were more developed, they seemed too one-sided to me. They were all about their supposed "deformity" and not enough about the rest of their personality...yes, they had differences from the rest of us, but they also have similarities...what happened to them? What happened in their life that caused each of them to react the way they did to their unusual qualities?

RE: Unusual

I asked to read this book because of the unusual premise, but I have to admit that it creeped me out a bit. I did like the fact that the estate was a refuge for retired circus animals. The elephants were the only truly likable characters for me. The humans were just so wrapped up in their own egos.
